Is Boulder a Blue Zone?

Emily Hsieh

Boulder County consistently ranks among the healthiest communities in the United States and boasts one of the highest life expectancies in the country. While Boulder is not officially designated as a Blue Zone, its culture and lifestyle often draw comparisons to the world’s longest-living communities.

What is a Blue Zone?

The term "Blue Zone" was popularized by author and researcher Dan Buettner and his team, who identified regions around the world where people live significantly longer, healthier lives than average—often reaching age 100 at remarkably high rates.

The five original Blue Zones are:

  • Okinawa
  • Sardinia
  • Nicoya Peninsula
  • Ikaria
  • Loma Linda

Researchers discovered that these communities share several common lifestyle habits, including:

  • Predominantly plant-based diets
  • Regular natural movement through activities such as walking, gardening, and physical work
  • Strong family relationships and social connections
  • A clear sense of purpose
  • Low levels of chronic stress
  • Limited smoking and, in some regions, moderate alcohol consumption

Why Boulder is Often Compared to a Blue Zone

Although Boulder is not one of the original Blue Zones, many aspects of daily life in the city closely align with the characteristics found in these longevity hotspots.

Boulder residents enjoy:

  • High levels of physical activity, including hiking, cycling, walking, and outdoor recreation
  • A strong culture centered on health, wellness, and preventive care
  • Easy access to fresh, healthy foods through local farms and farmers markets
  • High educational attainment and income levels, both of which are associated with positive health outcomes
  • Strong community engagement and social connections
  • A life expectancy that exceeds that of many communities across the United States

Boulder has also participated in broader Blue Zones-inspired initiatives aimed at improving community well-being and quality of life.

Boulder's commitment to healthy living has earned national recognition. In 2017, Boulder was ranked the #1 Happiest City in America in the National Geographic–Gallup Special/Blue Zones Index. The study highlighted the city's low smoking and obesity rates, active lifestyle, walkability, thriving cycling culture, and strong sense of community.

Combined with its abundant outdoor recreation opportunities, access to healthcare, educated population, and wellness-focused culture, Boulder is frequently cited as one of the healthiest places to live in the United States.

Final Thoughts

While Boulder is not officially recognized as a Blue Zone, it embodies many of the same principles that contribute to longer, healthier, and more fulfilling lives. From its active outdoor culture and emphasis on wellness to its strong social connections and community engagement, Boulder offers a lifestyle that mirrors many of the qualities found in the world's most renowned longevity hotspots.

For those seeking a community that supports healthy living, Boulder stands out as one of America's closest examples of a "Blue Zone-like" lifestyle.
