Family Friendly Boulder Hikes

The quick answer

The best hike with kids is the one that ends before anyone melts down. These Boulder trails stay short and gentle without feeling like a compromise — real views, real creek, real Flatirons, on legs that are still learning.

Hiking with kids in Boulder is one of the reasons families love living and visiting here. The city has an extensive network of trails where children can experience creeks, wildlife, rock formations, wildflowers, and mountain views without committing to long or difficult hikes. Boulder has even been recognized as a great place for raising outdoor-minded kids, with numerous family programs through its Open Space and Mountain Parks system.

If you're hiking with kids, the best Boulder trails combine short distances, interesting scenery, shade or water features, and manageable elevation gain. Here are some of our local favorites:

Chautauqua Park - Bluebell and Baird Trail

Moderate • 1.5 Mile Loop • 459 ft. Elevation Gain

This trail is best for iconic Boulder views without a strenuous climb. The Bluebell-Baird Trail is one of the best-kept gems around the Flatirons. It sits within the trail network accessed from Chautauqua Park and offers many of the same beautiful views as the more famous Chautauqua trails, but typically with fewer crowds.

Easy • 2.5 Miles Out and Back • 459 ft. Elevation Gain

Bobolink is one of Boulder’s most family-friendly trails thanks to its nearly flat terrain, wide paths, and beautiful creekside setting. South Boulder Creek runs alongside portions of the trail, creating plenty of opportunities for kids to explore, toss rocks, and watch birds and wildlife. It’s suitable for strollers, grandparents, and anyone looking for a relaxed outdoor walk.

Bald Mountain Scenic Area - Pines to Peak Loop

Easy • 1.1 Miles Loop • 200 ft. Elevation Gain

The Pines to Peaks Loop is one of the best “first summit” hikes for kids. The short climb feels rewarding, and the summit offers surprisingly expansive views that feel much more remote than the effort required to reach them. Compared to more popular trailheads like Chautauqua or Flagstaff, Bald Mountain is often quieter and more relaxed, making it ideal for a peaceful family outing.

Wonderland Lake Trail

Easy • 2 Mile Loop • 88 ft. Elevation Gain

Wonderland Lake is a favorite among local families thanks to its beautiful scenery, gentle terrain, and countless opportunities for little ones to stop and explore. Nestled at the base of the foothills in North Boulder, the trail offers stunning views of the Flatirons and surrounding mountains. As you stroll around the lake, you'll pass through wetlands, grasslands, and open meadows where it's common to spot ducks, hawks, mule deer, and other wildlife throughout the year. With minimal elevation gain and plenty of natural features to keep kids engaged, Wonderland Lake is one of the easiest and most enjoyable outdoor adventures in Boulder for families with babies and toddlers.

Anne U. White Trail

Easy • 3.2 Miles Out and Back • 479 ft. Elevation Gain

Source: Polizzi, Melissa. (2024, May 7). AllTrails.com

This trail is one of Boulder’s most charming creekside hikes—and a favorite for families who want something shaded, interactive, and a little more “adventurous” than a flat path, but not as intense as a mountain climb. The Anne U. White trail follows Fourmile Canyon Creek through a narrow canyon, with frequent water crossings and a steady but gentle climb.

NCAR Trail

Easy • 1 Mile Loop • 300 ft. Elevation Gain

Source: Weber, J. (2025, November 4). AllTrails.com

The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Trail includes educational displays, weather and climate exhibits inside and interpretive signs outside, connected the famous NCAR Mesa Labs, making it a fun option for curious kids. It’s especially great if you want something that feels like a mountain hike without committing to a long or steep climb. For older kids, the NCAR trail can be connected to the Mesa Trail, Bear Canyon, and the Skunk Canyon area for an extended hike.

By Age Group:

  • Toddlers (2-4): Bobolink Trail, Wonderland Lake, Anne U. White Trail
  • Elementary Age (5-10): Bluebell and Baird Trail, Bald Mountain, NCAR Trail

Final Thoughts

Hiking in Boulder can be very family-friendly. As a family with four kids—three of them still babies—we understand both the joys and the challenges of getting outdoors together. It’s always rewarding, but it also takes a bit of planning to make sure everyone stays comfortable, safe, and happy along the way.

With so many trails to choose from in Boulder, picking the right one makes all the difference. It’s important to match the hike to your family’s pace and energy level, dress in layers for changing weather, and always pack sunscreen. A little preparation goes a long way toward a smooth and enjoyable outing.

Happy family hiking!

One thing worth knowing — weekly.

The move-up market from the inside: the numbers when there are numbers, and the trade-off that usually goes unsaid when there aren't. Five minutes, weekly. No hype.
